I was out at the farm over the weekend and all the crops are still waiting to be harvested. Each day is an eternity and a further lose of money. Now it's snowing. Most people don't realize that farmers make 99% of their income in 2-3 weeks. If it rots in the field the loses are huge.
There seems to be a romantic notion amongst certain comfortably off city folk in the UK about how "simply marvellous" it would be to give it all up and buy a farm. As a gardener even I know how the weather can wipe out an entire crop in a day. For example, a late frost meant not a single apricot and few apples and those there were were subjected to a prolonged hot Summer and drought. For me it's a hobby so it's a nuisance but for others it's their entire livelihood. A hard life to be a farmer. I don't think my nerves would stand it!
