COW ALERT !!!

Open Range cattle sign--- no fences to keep cattle off of the roadway. . (If you hit a cow, it's automatically your fault, and you get to pay for it).
Near Ely, Nevada.
Equipment Used
Neg# DCUM 089. Mamiya RB67, 90mm, Yg filter, FP4 film. 1986
At least in Wyoming the liability for hitting an open range cow don't automatically rest on either the rancher or the driver. However, if you hit a sheep then the rancher will most likely be at fault. Why? Because cattle and sheep are treated differently with regard to fencing laws.

The first time my inlaws came to visit us in Nevada they had fun comparing the boring looking California cow on their signs to our frisky looking cow sign. Open range does not mean open season. Dark cows at night can be a legitimate concern if you're going too fast, which I'm often guilty of.

Is that the road to Gerlach?

Few bullet holes in that sign. Almost virginal. Around here most rural signs look like sieves.
