I shot this about 13 years ago, sly. The only usuable HIE 4x5 I have is a box from 1967! I have exposed a few sheets from it. They were quite fogged, but still very printable. That was the first time I've ever handled the old thick emulsion films. They are quite heavy and floppy when wet!Bruce, the lighting this day was quite unique. Winter sun, and clouds perhaps contributed mostly to it. I prefered shooting HIE in the winter as there isn't as much IR than in the summer.This is a terrifically difficult negative to print in the darkroom. It is marred with pinholes due to overly strong stop bath. I always used a very mild stop bath with this film, but for some reason, I messed up. Spotting a 16x20 print took me hours when it was in an exhibit. I sold the print and have never made another one. I've since become quite good at spotting negtives, so this negative may see the light of an enlarger once again... minus all the bloody print spotting!These were back in the days when there seemed an unlimited supply of HIE. It never crossed my mind that someday this wonderful emulsion, would be gone. Cheers, and thanks for looking and commenting!!
Really nice work Andrew. At first I thought these were the husband and wife rocks in Mie prefecture, near Ise, but I didn't remember seeing a torii gate like the one posted here. I shot some HIE there (35mm) there but it doesn't look as good as this one! Like you, I prefer shooting HIE in winter too.
