Tibetan Carver, Take 2

Tibetan Carver, Take 2

Another neg from my last shoot with a master Tibetan carver who is working here in town for a few months on a very ambitious project.

I think I am preferring this neg, even though it offers no face but offers a better overview of the work (I think I have enough other face shots to complete the series).

BTW this was done holding the camera overhead, braced against the (low) ceiling, about 1/30 sec as I recall. Not quite as critically sharp as one might desire, but I was obsessing over his hand motions.

The tint of the neg is form the scan, it was dev'd in wd2d+. I envision the print also being sepia toned or perhaps Pt, can't decide. Comments/suggestions welcome.

I like this one, keithwms. It is loaded with atmosphere, process, and it looks great.

I like this one as well. Beautiful. Do you know what kind of wood he's using?

Thanks guys. JW, he is using poplar, which I am told is not a good choice in terms of ease of use, but he went to a store and that's all he saw that was carvable, plus with no english abilities, he couldn't ask where to get anything else. So he is stuck with poplar, and you can see the really hard chipping that he has to do with it. Plus he's working on a very tight deadline. Incidentally, the piece in front of him is just one of many that will all come together and form a sort of throne/chair. He is very anxious about the project now because he hasn't been able to start painting any of it yet (due to the weather and lack of space indoors). He only has another week or so to finish it.

It is a very interesting photograph, the wood work caught my eye,and the angle of the camera.

Thanks Mike and Kal, much appreciated. I look forward to printing it. I showed it to the carver, who speaks only Tibetan, and he made that universally-understood thumbs up gesture. I was relieved; apparently I earned myself a few more visits to his shop. Thought he might be tired of me orbiting his head while he works.
