Lincoln Theater, Snowy Night, U Street, Washington Dc

A view looking west on U Street in Washington DC, past the Lincoln Theater. If you look carefully, you can see the pattern made by the blinking lights of an emergency vehicle on the left.

I can certainly see one icicle hanging from one of the street lights. A nice touch which completes the image of an intensely cold scene. I'd have difficulty taking a shot of a few hundredths of a second let alone 1 minute in that cold.

Correct me if I am wrong. Is not the old Lincoln Theater now preserved as a landmark? Was it not one of the former film palaces; and was it not a segregated theater from the days of Jim Crow (American Apartheid) before desegregation? And not to be confused with Ford's Theater, where Lincoln was murdered?

The Lincoln Theater doesn't have legal preservation status that I'm aware of, but yes, it is one of the old movie palaces/vaudeville halls that was one of the centerpieces of "Black Broadway" on U Street. The old Howard theater a few blocks away was a much grander grand dame of a theater, but has sat unused and abandoned for a long time. There are now signs on the outside indicating that within the next 2 years it will reopen, so there is hope yet. I'm worried though because the Lincoln, a smaller venue, still has a hard time making ends meet.

hi scott

nice image!
i love the dashed lines of the emergency vehicles

it isn't hard to put something on the national register, or have it designated a local landmark.
the form is pretty straight forward, and just requires a few pages describing the significance
of the theater ...

looking forward to the next snow scene!

Really nice stuff lately, Scott!

Piece of interesting recent trivia about the Lincoln theatre. On Feb 11th, it was reopened with a concert for Obama. Joshua Bell played, and... get this.. he played a violin that hadn't been played since the night of Lincoln's assassination. I didn't get to go, obviously, but I did research Bell's program, which he played in town here in Charlottesville, last night.
