My first self portrait in the Doris Day diffusion
mode. A white nylon over the lens with a small hole in the center for some sharpness but no retouching allowed. Portrait style has sure changed.
This is really impressive work, and since you mention it Doris Day was my first reaction when I saw you're picture , I like the way the white nylon has smoothed the skin tones and diffused the image, in the old days we used to use black nylons and burn a hole in them with a cigarette to get this effect, try it sometimes.
Thank you all for the nice comments and Mick, yes it is toned in selenium and Benjiboy, I use white nylon for the taking lens and use black nylon on the enlarger lens but which to use really depends on the lighting which in this case was fairly soft. This portrait was made using only diffusion on the taking lens and was an example I used when teaching a class on the early styles of commercial portraiture. Incidentally I took the portrait on my 39th birthday.
