Infra Red Jet Engine Test

Infra Red Jet Engine Test

This image was shot on Kodak EIR. I had been told that by photographing jet engines with Infra red films that the engines would glow in the images due to infra red light being emitted from them (something to do with parts in the engine being ultra hot and the metals releasing infra red light) I know infra red film is VERY different to Thermal Imaging!!! but i experimented to see if such a thing occurs. Im my case it didn't. is there any truth to the jet light story or is this Myth Busted?

If you were going to see such an effect, it would not be on a high bypass turbofan photographed from the side. Try from behind, preferably with an older turbojet or something military.

thanks for this lee, yes I was aware about the diffrence however i was not sure weather there was components on the jet engine that were so hot they were glowing with infra red wavelenghts of light but just not hot enough to emit visable wavelenghts of light. When i was studying photography we used HIE and a glowing iron rod to shoot and as the rod cooled we photographed it at intervals. when the rod went a super dark cherry red then appeared black we shot it again and while we couldnt see the rod with out eyes it appeared that the film could see it. the rod was still emitting infra red light. the jet engine as it appears in my image didnt seem to do this same effect.

very nice shot even though you didn't get the results you expected.

how / where did you develop this film? the link to the kodak technical data above states some special requirements such as not using labs with infrared sensors...

I own a pro lab in sydney http://thelighthouselab.blogspot.com/ I'm in the process of launching a blog about it feel free to visit. I still have tons of work to do to complete the blog but if you want a sneak peek of it in its early stages your welcome...
