Andrew I would prefer your darker version. However what is interesting about #2 is that you have surface detail in the lamp standard which is missing in #1.
If it was possible to produce the dark version but have the lamp standard as shown above, you would have IMO a perfect shot.

I hear you Vincent, but easier said that done using infectious development. You usually have to sacrifice some areas of the black end of the tonal scale I've found anyway.
