I think that the rocks in the background are the real eye catchers here. But the highlights on the rocks in the foreground keep the viewers attention in that area. If you cropped them out the picture works on new level. Try placing a black card over the area on the screen and see what you think. You could also burn down the rocks in the foreground to achieve the same effect.
