I love this image. I find it very moving. Something about the way the complex patterns in the clouds contrast with the formal composition of the trees.
"...at a local lake." That looks like a great lake. Was it a Great Lake?
This is a wonderful composition. My only comment would be in agreement with others who suggested bringing out the cloud contrasts more, IMO especially near the upper center, where the sky peeks through. I could imagine that being a bit more dramatic to offset and balance the dark trees.
I really can not limit my comments to three words, here is the rest:
Is "WOW" really a serious critique? My favorite is, "nice dude."
Instead of making a picture similar to Hiroshi Sugitmoto you made one like Michael Kenna.
There seems to be two different pictures in one. That is to say one is about the clouds, and the other is about the five trees. There is no point where the two come together as a unified thing.
Tom said, "I love this type of image, but for some reason this one does not work for me."
I would say your are "left feeling that (you) should love it like the others clearly do." because there is not much in the picture to really feel about. It is pretty, stylistic and in the end, boring.
Now this is just an amazing picture. I don't know what more to add but "Wow!" and "Nice, dude." LOL
I like the calm and dramatic I see in the picture. I can see myself sitting there just watching this scene for hours.
Sure, I can say technically it is well composed, nice printing in bring out just enough details in the clouds, yadda, ydda, ydda...but I really like the emotion the pic gives me.
