Descent to Death Valley

This is a print from [long expired] Konica IR film shot with a red filter last fall. Thanks Gustavo for the konica! <sigh> Yet another discontinued film that I like :(

The print is on grade 3 slavich matte, developed in PQ as usual.

The road was spot-bleached a bit (Farmer's reducer) to pop it out a bit, then the entire print was very briefly bleached, washed and then finally Se toned.

Please pardon the crummy scan off my desktop all-in-one scanner, it puts lines where they aren't. Couldn't quite fit the whoel print on the scanner.

This was with the 50mm on my mamiya 6, as I recall. A tighter crop with a 150mm lens from the same scene, on provia 400x, may be seen here.

Thanks Kal! Coming from you, that comment pretty much makes my day

Egad, on my better monitor, now I see all the scanner lines. Please take my word that they aren't there in the print. Richard, I am going to have to get my proper scanner back from ya!

A really great print and a great image you selected for the shot. I first saw this in my recent LensWork.

color is nice so you know what the scenery really looked like, but i much prefer this shot. it is sharper and way more detailed. and that dark sky is some kind of surreal thing. this is the effects of infrared film?

1SharpMonkey, thanks, yes the dark sky is from the red-filtered IR. This was ~3 or 4pm, as I recall, with the light coming from the right. There was a bit of Santa Ana / fire pollution rolling in but not much, and the air wasn't humid at all (as usual over the valley), so the sky dropped quite dark even with a simple red filter.

Bob, you saw the same scene in Lenswork? I'll have to find that.

Thanks Martin.

This was on highway 190, coordinates: 36 deg 21'17.86" N and 117 deg 32'28.11" W; my shots are looking roughly east northeast. There are several markers around there on google earth, such as "Father Crowley Point."

Fantastic work Keith
