Moving Company at Night

9.5x6.25 inch silver enlargement
and
4.5x3 inch silver enlargement

I made this exposure in late 2006 but hadn't printed it properly until this weekend. It has a sort of 1930s feel to me... it also has that diorama look that I can never quite explain, probably stems from shooting this from above on the upper deck of the local library's parking structure.

Very very nice Shawn. It really has a 30's-40's film feel both due to the subject matter (the 'streamline' typeface) and the perspective. Indeed it looks like it's lit from behind hence the diorama effect

The tonal range looks great for such a scene. Did you use stand development ?

Very beautiful print, Shawn! Your night time shots are really good, I particularly like how you use your materials and how you push them to the limits with extreme highlight compensation and back-lighting like this the effects are pretty impressive!
Your fan in St Paul...

Thanks fellows!

Yes, I did use semi-stand, I do for all my night work. As Thomas says the compensating effects really help tame the highlights. This fell into my "normal range" which gets Rodinal at 1:125 for one hour. If the scene is "off the hook contrasty" (like my last upload) I use Rodinal at 1:200 for only half an hour. I feel pretty good about these times/dilutions thus far, when I'm really comfortable I'll post them in the forum for anyone interested. All the best. Shawn

Love the composition and rendition, Shawn. A very nice addition to your night series.

All the best,
Daniel
