For my first attempt at location 5x4 I took some friends to Snowdonia in North Wales and spent my time wandering round a disused quarry called Dinorwic looking for cool shapes. I ended up selecting seven to print, of which this is the first.
Also a good first go at selenium. Before toning everyone said it was under printed and not enough contrast. That was just me allowing for the toner!
Interesting. The composition is compelling. The lights and darks work quite well together; it feels like they are swirled together like an ice cone.
It looks like you may need a longer development time. The highlights look flat and there are very few midtones. The exposure looks ok (judging by the detail in the shadows).
Thanks Chris. This is actually the first exposure I made! Composing and focusing were the main points of the exercise and I was pleased with the results. The other reason was to find out if I enjoyed the style of working enough to invest in a 5x4 of my own. (I did.)
As ever, the digitised version isn't a fantastic representation of the real print, which I think is better. My skills at matching my darkroom print with photoshop still have a long way to go. That said, you could well be right. Are you talking about print or neg development?
