I'm a big lover of brush strokes, but prefer subtle wisps emerging from the edge of the image, rather than the coarser edges that distract from the image itself.
thanks for showing your experiments with this open-edged approach to coating ..... i like the effect, esp. on the certain subject matter ..... after seeing yours i think i'll proceed to try it next time i have a chance ..... question: how are you identifying the outlying edges of the negative when you start coating? looks like you are either coating off the edge of the paper or using a 'window' template to coat within (as in bottom and left edges, where brush strokes are squared off) ..... it must be tricky business to stay within the 8x10 frame and not coat out too far!
i cut the paper to 8x10 and then just "wing it" when i coat. i do coat off the edge of the paper. i use an old crappy magazine to keep the sensitizer off the counter...it is one of those over sized magazines. again. i coat the paper back and forth with the paper in the horizontal position. this will explain the stroke difference.
jose and DE, thanks for the comment. i will try to get some where in the middle.
