my girlfriend's grandmother, please critique, especially about the unlevel background.. she was slouching so I corrected in the print. What do you think? Thanks.

Could be the effect of her glasses but ideally I'm of the school where they eyes need to be the sharpest part of a portrait. The background looks good to me as it's well out of focus. Unless there's a tad more contrast in the print I'd burn the left side in a little more as the light is coming from the right to give it more depth. I hope you accept my comments as positive feedback which is how they are intended.
 
The whole image might be printed down a little bit, especially for scanner presentation. On my monitor her forehead is almost paper white. I would shoot for Z VI.5. Also there is a lot of whiteness surrounding her head, which is distracting. This can be burned in a little to focus on granny.
