Liam Finn I

8x10 contact in cyanotype - Liam Finn, son of Neil Finn of the band Crowded House - a talented and successful musician himself ...

I wish I had tilted the focus to catch his lips in addition to his eyes - the DOF was so small only this neg caught his eyes anyway ;)

This is just the test print I did in prussian blue but I quite like it - the Pt/Pd print we used as a prop in his latest music video (still in production) - burned it in petrol - wooo!

Well done Nick. I like this a lot. The cold blue is offset by the warm tone highlights. Good work.

PS I love Crowded Houses music. Hope to see them again in the summer.

cyanotype usually leaves me out in the cold but this is very well done...great print Nick!!
Best, Peter

Great work. You can see his father and even his uncle in his features. He lived in the same suburb in Melbourne as me for a while.

The paper is the Weston Diploma, and stained a little from rough processing hence the warmish cast in the highlights - perhaps augmented a little in the scan more so than in reality ...

The contrast I got with Mike Wares Cyanotype with some dichromate added to the brew, and also a post splash of peroxide - no idea of the amount, I am pretty rough with both ! - the peroxide makes a neat fizz when I pour it on undiluted from the bottle, makes blue immediately darker and the highlights bleached, taking it out into the sun will further bleach it... Hence for initial exposure I blast it much more than normal, this seems to cut through the fact the Weston paper seems to 'expose' the brew upon application as after it dries it goes a deepish green just like a partially exposed bit of regular paper would ...

Ah well ! Seems to work

Also, if its of interest: the neg was done in Pyro PMK and taking a stab at my memory with the bellows extension required for a 1:1 mag I'd say I pushed it to account for the loss

Kevin>> I was watching an advert for an upcoming Split Enz concert which had footage of a much younger Neil - spitting image! sans facial hair, its in the eyes huh.

Thanks for the comments! - I'll post links for the vid with the burning print once its complete ...

Not much else to add. Amazing, crisp blues with deep beautiful tones. And from an artistic standpoint, the portrait would do well printed with any technique I think. It's strong just from a content standpoint too. The beautiful print accentuates it though.
