Nice work Steve! Take a look at the print again....might gain by "editing out" the material to the right of the brick wall. I see that one would not "see "the bow of the row boat in the foreground, but over-all, to my eyes, the composition is much stronger with the image being cropped. What do you think? The center of the photo then becomes the house on top of the wall, with the strong horizontal of the balcony on the right being parrallel to the brick wall...almost everything in the scene takes the eyes from left to right as even the boats are horizontal, with the "tension" being created by the roof....note how the sloop of the roof on the right then matches the staircase on the left AND the staircase on the edge of the right frame without the distraction of the house to the right of the wall....well done. Let me know what you think.
You could be right. It's difficult to know where to crop really either at the printing or the taking stage. With a scene like this, wherever you point the camera, there is always half a boat at the edge of the frame.
I can see three possibilities for a crop to the right as you suggest. The first would be a gentle crop just to the right of the centre of the industrial looking building but making sure that the boat with the sloping cabin is not cut out. The next option is to crop out a bit more so that most of the industrial building is gone but ensuring that the foreground boat to the right remains complete. The third would be exactly as you suggest on the edge of the wall but, as you say, this will chop off some of the boat in the front.
I will have a play with this and post some more from the same area soon.
