mon ami

Boxing Day morning after a spectacular sunrise. I'd identified this shot, started setting it up, but then saw the sky heating up and went over and made another image first - Solent sunrise posted here too a few days ago.
This utilises intentional limited depth of field through choice of plane, horizontal above the ground and the soft focus of the Cooke lens further isolates the boat from the salt marsh.

Posting in the critique gallery to see whether others feel this treatment is appropriate.

The blue boat does jump out at you. This effect is achieved with a yellow background which is a complementary color of blue. Placing complementary colors adjacent to one another intensify the colors. That said, I think the composition is lacking. I do know that boats need water to float. but the ditch of water in the background is a big negative. It detracts from the composition. You should have changed your prospective so that the boat was surrounded by the yellow ground cover and cropped the damn ditch out. This would futher enhanced the drama of the print by maximizing on the visual effects of complementary colors. Next time slow down a bit. Think about what you are doing and interrogate every element of the composition for purpose.

By the way, the name is cute, but does not impress me. It is the complementary colors that drew and held my attention as a viewer.

Thanks Rick and Pentaxuser, glad that you liked it.

Well, please don't hold back Steve, I'm sure there is something up the other barrel.

I think having made the effort to look at your website, that it is probably most polite and therefore best to say that we are trying to achieve different things. Yes my composition is lacking - all the conventions and clichees you strive to include in your pictures.

I will get on to the boat owner forthwith and insist that he/she changes the name of their boat.

Baxter, I will be posting some of my work soon for review. You can take revenge at that time. I do believe that first impressions are better and more productive that polite impressions. By the way the rules of composition apply to all art forms independent of intent or content.

Please keep in mind that I do not bother critiquing an image unless it has merit and your most definitely does. Here comes the other barrel. This is a form that is explicitly about criticism to foster improvement even if it stings a little bit. If you are looking for niceties then I suggest you post your images in the standard gallery.

Be patient. My stuff is coming soon. Gulp!
