Photo taken of my son in my dads barn. What do you think of the bucket? do you think it distracts too much from the image? i did not crop at all it is a contact print from 8x10
Distracting, but in a good way. Sets an odd tone to the image that works well with the pose and facial expression. It helps to create a strong diagonal across the frame...bucket-boy-broom.
I like it as is, but would ask what story did you want to tell..one about your son sitting in your dads barn? This one works (buckets and all - they do not bother me in the context of the story). If you wanted a portrait of your son then maybe would have moved in a bit closer (or changed to a 300mm lens - if one was available). My guess would be that this is a place you know and are comfortable with, a place that has meaning and tells a story in your mind...so go with it, it is a nice work and I will bet that years from now your son will cherish the photograph as much as you will. Thanks for sharing.
This one caught my eye with beautiful lighting, the boy's gaze and movement in his foot. A lovely portrait of your son, Frank. To answer your question, I'd prefer it without the bucket.
