Industrial Skeleton - New Gulf, TX

On occasion ... very rare occasion ... something intrigues me enough to haul two tripods out of the back of my truck and rig up my 12x20 camera as a vertical.
They are few and far between, ironically I "saw" alot more vertical compositions when I was shooting with a 7x17 camera.
But sometimes Im intrigued enough to go through the effort to shoot a vertical. This is one I was actually pretty excited about shooting. The weather was crappy and rainy, I actually wanted to wait for a break in the drizzle to shoot this scene, as I was drawn to the complex skeletal/graphical trusses and the reflection they had in the water collecting in the foreground.

Always appreciate peoples thoughts/comments/critiques/etc.

matt, looks like it could be two complete images here. I sliced them at ground level and it works, but the complete shot is very nice. The reflection in the standing water is interesting with the refuse and abandoned feel implicit in the foreground. This would be a shot worth doing with a different sky and lighting. tim

Matt,

I'm glad you did! This is one of my favorites of yours.

the tin in the middle of the reflection is outstanding.

Seem to recall when you made this one matt, and as I recall it was less than good weather. The lower half is just outstanding, and while the upper part is interesting I think it wants a layer or 2 of gum - this one might get real interesting with different layer than you normally use.

great image and i know how hard it is. I was in the corksrew swamp with my 8x20 and tried to take a vertical and found that the tripod would not hold the vertical when I tilted the camera. so I had to have my friend hold the camera so it would not move. didn't work. but I cemented cork to the top of my tripod and now it will stay at any angle.

thanks all...
noseoil... I actually have contemplated attempting to print a 12x12 of both the top and bottom halves to see how they look squared off. Might give it a try.

Mike - it is sized and awaiting some gum layers. Blue colors seem to surface when I think about gum layers on this one... will have to experiment.

again, thanks for the comments all.

Matt- another success for you. I think I can see what you mean about blue in your gum layers - subtle pale blues in the highlights AND deep blues as accents. But maybe that's more for handcoloring than gumover. In any case, seeing this image makes me think alot about how we make decisions about final composition. It's a fun exercise to look at an image and think about what you would think about in that scene and what isn't in the image that you might want to look at.

Your comment about the 7x17 also intrigued me, and I think I know why it is easier to find verticals with the 7x17- the proportion. The 12x20 is more square, which doesn't encourage vertical lines as much. The 7x17 is such a long, tall shape that it begs to be pointed up, to contrast with the extreme width it offers in a horizontal shot.

My favorite of yours to date Matt and I like all of your work. This just keeps pulling me in further and further and I'm such a big industrial decay fan to start.
Take care and happy holidays

Figured as much matt!! actually I can see the blues, but maybe a touch of p.maroon as well, finished with a layer of black to get the skeleton to pop..but hey it's your print - and I know you will find what it wants.

Yes, your photo is in the reflection. Thanks for posting.
