Pond Scum #86

4x5 silver contact print

I'm about one darkroom session away from having a finished print of all my decent Pond Scum negatives. I'll be editing them down to 25 or 30 for a small show and 10 for a portfolio.

Pond Scum #46 will be on display at the Project Basho Onward show in Philadelphia starting January 10, 2008. I plan to attend the opening reception on Saturday the 12th so if you're in the area and want to get together to photograph or look at prints, let me know!

very cool shapes here. Kentona seems to be a great paper for this series, I've got to try some!

I particularly like this one. Very effective composition, with great contrast, toning and the cloud reflections seal the deal. Very striking image.

Can you say that the 'scum' envelopes the reflection nicely - with a straight face? Well, that's the best way I can describe it. Such a nice blend of textures and tones. Your focus on this project is something I aspire to in my projects. My hat's off to you, sir.

You know, I'm having some trouble accepting these images in B&W. What was the reason for choosing that over colour? Just curious. It seems colour would be a more obvious choice for such a subject... I appreciate the textures but the monochrome just doesn't sit right with me.

It's all subjective I know.

Hi Shawn, this one must make the cut .... it is excellent... it is full of light and presence ....

the composition is great.... beautiful gradation .. just great ... I wish I could make the actual showing!!!!

Thanks fellows! I certainly appreciate the support so many of you have shown. I'll be sure to let everyone know if/where/when someone commits to showing them.

Walter,
At the heart of this series lie my feelings about scalability and the fundamental, primordial connections in nature and our daily lives. Too photograph this specific subject matter in color would introduce greens in such a dominating way that, for me, would undermine those feelings which inspire me in the first place. I'm working on an essay to accompany the finished series where I will be going into my motivations and subsequent discoveries in more detail and may serve to further answer you question. All the best. Shawn

I think this is one of the best ones yet. it is nice to see that you are keeping the quality up and the images interesting, with such a limited platform to start with.

I would be there in a instant if i wasn't in Florida and I was up there.

The variation provided by the reflection of the tree and the softer tones of the upper left corner make this my favourite of the series.

Thanks fellows, I was particularly excited by this one during my last printing session. Actually, I found the platform wasn't all that limited. Who new? All the best. Shawn
