As the conversation goes

I photographed this gentleman and his wife in the city of Miguel Calmon. I met them as I walked the streets, and saw them sitting in their front porch. After striking up a conversation with them, this gentleman went inside and brought 2 chairs (one for me and one for my cousin), so that we could talk more confortably.

We talked for a while, about their lives, about my life, about the previous week's robbery/murder which happened down their street. Like most of the people from this region, they were very kind to me.

This print was made at 170 magenta, but the right side (from his knee on) was burned for 50% at 170 yellow, in order to keep the wall and the outside from blowing out.

I am very happy with this print, but would like to hear your take on it.

I really like this. The area to the left beyond the wall doesn't really add anything, so I might crop it out, but I hate comments on photos that say "this would be so much better if you would crop out the..." so I won't say it :smile: Could the left side of his face be a little lighter maybe? The shadow in the crotch is perfect (and much needed.) A great portrait.
 
Wow, I really like this image! I enjoy people and he looks like someone interesting to talk with. I get so tired of photos of only people that we "think" are beautiful. I enjoy so much more, to see photos of people with "character".

Nice work with the whole series, Andre. The people are fabulous, and I like the camera positions you're using with the work, which creates a sense of being there, and being engaged with the subjects. My assumption is that you're spending enough time with the people to get beyond the period when their expressions would look posed and unnatural.

Although I think Will's cropping suggestion may make the image of this gentleman stronger, I also like the sense of environment that is created by your original framing here.

You are right. I try to spend more time talking to the people I photograh than photographing them (which is not always possible, especially in a work/school setting).

I agree with you on the cropping issue. Partly because I'm a non-cropper fundamentalist (who has transgressed here and there), partly because I like this as it is. In fact, being a non-cropper makes me only print the frames I think do well enough as a whole...

Yup! Knowing that my prints are identifieable as mine is a HUGE ego-boost. I know it's partly due to the print tone, partly due to the filled out carrier, etc.. but still.

I like this image, though , I would like to see something interesting happening on the far right of this scene. I think your composition is very good maybe the timing of exposure could have waited until the right side became more alive.
