Fall Farm Foliage

This was made at the same time I made 'Barnside with Vine' that's been in my gallery since October 31st of 2004. I have a gallery show coming up in March, and I've been looking at old work to see what I might include that I've not looked at for a while, and this appealed to me a lot. It's a negative scan, but with almost no manipulations at all, and the few there are are those that I can easily do in the darkroom for those who concern themselves (rightly, on this site) with such matters.

I would use this print for the show... I imagine that properly matted and framed, this would jump out at the viewer!

This is the type of shot a person sees and bonds with straight away when the elements are right. By that I mean that it is so easy to get this type of shot looking messy and wrong, but difficult to get it right. It is a mass of shapes in the leaves set against the rigid straight lines of the fence, and even in mono we can't help but feel the warmth of colour in the wood and the leaves. Where I feel it particularly works, however, is that it is essentially a composition of 3 triangles, although they are not obviously seen as such when first viewed. I'm talking about the 2 fence ones ably supporting the largest triangle of the foliage, and I feel that the composition would be weakened without them. It's a fine shot.

Thanks for your comments, guys. david b, the show is at the Wallkill River Gallery in Montgomery, NY. My wife and I will offer a joint exhibition (she with paintings, and me with photographs) with an opening on March 8th.
