The subject asked me for a print, but I don't have colour print equipment so just printed it B&W to see how it would come out. It came out quite flat so I decided to stain it in Red Bush, but then I changed my mind and dumped a load of Kenco into the water too... The print has scanned much darker and greener than it actually is, it is more yellow / light coffee coloured than the scan shows it to be.
The tonality from your own private "alternate" process adds greatly to the photo texture! I agree that this is much better and more interesting than a color print.
What may be revealing is whether the subject, given his age, thought that this toned B&W was better than colour. I suspect that an awful lot of young people these days think that B&W is a curiosity and has some value for that but wouldn't want one given a choice between this and colour
What's involved? Do you simply develop, fix and then tone and is so what's the strength of the coffee and Redbush. How permanent is this kind of toning? Redbush is nice South African tea but an acquired taste, I found
@pentaxuser - You can see the original colour (scan) on my site: http://www.btinternet.com/~lawrencium2/photo_pages/0722.html The subject knows I only print B&W so he knows it'll be black and white, he's 23 BTW so not too young (and a bit of an arty kind of person, see link on the page with the colour image).
Yes, simply develop, fix and then tone. Strength I'm not sure; Strong enough that I couldn't see the print a few mm's down in the tray. I find it takes a good 15 minutes or so to get to this strength anyway. How permanent I'm not sure, I've got toned images from over 6 months ago that don't appear to be fading, but I don't know how long it would last (Tim Rudman's book says a few years for coffee, much longer for tea).
I like Redbush, a good substitute for the caffeine post watershed.
Thanks for info. Must get Tim's book. At my age 23 is very young. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday for me when reminiscing but only at night after a couple of drinks. In the morning and in winter, well......
I'll run with dark brown and Indian for tea to drink at least. Hasn't done for me yet.
