River Yore at Hawes

Not sure about this one. First attempt with Kodak Tri X which I developed in Rodinal. Even the 30mm Xpan lens didn't quite give me the reach I was after in capturing this broad loop in the river. But I liked the family group mucking about on the river bank as well as the form of the tree, but the composition feels a bit unbalanced, both pictorally and tonally, with too much open space to the right. Any thoughts welcome - both negative and positive. Any suggestions about what I might do to infuse some atmosphere into the image?

I think this image works quite well. I see what you mean about the RHS, but I don't feel it is unbalanced. It's been printed with that in mind and the fact that the brightest point I see on my monitor is behind the tree, I think it is balanced as a result. I like this a lot.

You can try early in the morning or in the evening on the same place with other light conditions and atmosphere and / or another time with some haze? For me it's a nice composition and photo.

I think mainly it's fine the way it is, but feel it's a bit too wide. I know you were looking for even more coverage, but working with what you've got, try cropping some off both the left and right side. Midway between the tree trunk and edge on the left side, and about 5-8% off the right hand side. I might employ an edge burn in lower left by the foot of the tree, as well as the lower right to draw you into the frame to what I view as the center of interest.

I agree with Tom, I also think it is also too wide. Experiment with cropping the winding river on the right. Crop in front of the nearest Rt side sheep's head and it makes a lot of difference. Your eye doesn't wander off the image. In Addition, If you split the tree on the left as suggested, I think you'll really have it. This is nit-picking though-it sure is a wonderful image to start with.
 
Despite being nearer the river and group than you were to the people and buildings in the Richmond shot, I feel the Fuji has picked up detail much better and is sharper.

An angler or boat in the space to the right would have filled it but would then have drawn attention away from the group. Like the others I think that a narrower angle and maybe larger figures would have made it better.

I quite like the wide angle, but the brightness behind the tree distubs ne a bit. It might also be worth considering printing it as 2 separate images. Both the LH side with the tree and figures, and the RH side with the sheep and distant hill would work IMHO.

Nice to see a shot in Wensleydale - happy reminders of the APUG UK weekent there a couple of years ago.

I THINK YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TWO GREAT IMAGES HERE. THE PASTORAL SCENE ON THE RIGHT WITH THE LAMBS GRAZING AND THE BEAUTIFUL SWEEP OF CLOUDS IN THE SKY.
THE SECOND IS THE LEFT HALF OF THE PHOTO WHICH CAN STAND ON ITS OWN AND ALLOW THE VIEWER TO FOCUS ON THAT CHARMING FAMILY!
