Light Pole, Shenango Dam

Light Pole, Shenango Dam

4.5 x 3 inch silver enlargement. Yes, I'm really into small intimate prints.... This seemed to me a bit like a stage (imagine the light pole is a microphone and the pool of light a spotlight) just waiting for the cast.

I made this exposure last fall. Now that I've got a dichro enlarger I'm making small prints and have been so impressed with the quality that I've decided to include them with my large format contact prints as part of my Shenango Dam Project. I'm using Pentax prime lenses on a largish wooden tripod, mirror lock up, Tmax 100 in Rodinal semistand (to increase acutance and control contrast) and printing small with a 50mm Nikkor enlarging lens. I must say I am really surprised by the sharpness and detail. Even the grain in the rushing water at the top is smooth. I'm still committed to LF but I'm proud to show these little guys right next to them! Love that 35mm!!!!!!!

Hey Shawn, this is quite interesting...I like that I have to view the whole image to get the entire perspective straight...Nice...

Awesome, Shawn! Love the print. Took me a while to figure it out, very intriguing!
I have this love/hate relationship with the 35mm format. Interestingly I find that small prints like the ones you're exhibiting, work really well, as well as really large ones. But medium sizes just get sort of muddy. They don't quite resolve the grain, so the sharpness suffers some. I would love to see your 35mm and LF prints together!

Beautiful light and great detail throughout the image.
I'm in love with Rodinal again myself..
Be well

Thanks everyone! The perspective and composition are a bit unusual. I was standing about 20 or 25 feet above the scene shooting down and slightly out towards the water. A really peaceful place to be in the middle of the night that is enhanced by the roar of the water and feeling of... I don't know... power or energy in the air. Thanks again! Shawn

Beautiful light in this image, and the smooth details of the reflections and currents in the upper part of the image are intrueging.

Wonderful, Shawn. I love the delicate shadows cast on the powerfully surging water. I didn't pick up on them the first time you posted this image. Without your title, I wouldn't have know what to make of the water.

All the best,
Daniel

Thanks fellows. Those shadows didn't show up as well in the neg scan I posted last fall. I was able to get much more out of the negative using split grade printing than I would have imagined. Thanks again! Shawn
