Pier Ruins

Pier Ruins

This photo is one that was taken in a similar fashion by another well know photographer in the forum, Bill Schwab, so this is by no means an original composition of mine. Bill was kind enough to take us to his favorite spots during the recent APUG outing and many of us could not resist the temptation. Something about those sticks in water I guess.....what?...I don't know but here is my crack at it.

I have become a fan of your work, John. Takes a keen eye, I'm sure, to see these scenes while exposing the film, to envision it.
Very nice of you to give credit to Bill Schwab. I can't wait to see more of the work created at this year's gathering. I'm sure there are many people 'in the dark' out there, tweaking negs and prints.

Very nice work John. It's always interesting to see another interpretation of similar areas. I love these long exposure shots near water. I am curious, for Tri-X 320, did you rate the film at 160. Also, the long exposure would indicate either a semi dark dawn or dusk shot as no ND Filters were used. Very nicely done.

Thanks Andrew. Yes this was a very long exposure and no filters were used. I did not rate the tri-x on this one because it was to dark and my spot meter was not giving me anything. Minutes earlier I was able to get a reading in the 4 min range but to compensate for reciprocity I knew the exposure needed to be longer. Really for these dusk exposures metering does not hold that much value. For instance on this negative I could have kept the shutter open another 20 minutes and it would have have had only a small effect on the density. For normal exposures I rate Tri-X 320 at around 200-250 when using FA-1027.

John,
I really enjoy the smooth tonal quality and composition of this image..it makes for a mood provoking eloquent statement...
