In this shot, I think that cropping out the hardware above the climber, as well as some of the wall behind her, would make a stronger image. The metal acts as a distraction and pulls focus away from the girl. A tighter crop would bring the center of interest closer to the girl. Good shot. tim
Hi Tim,
First: Thanx very much for you good comment.
Second: The reason I didn't cropped the hardwear out of the picture is that in my opinion it adds some direction in the picture. The climber must reach the hardware (named quickdraw) to prevent a fall to the ground.
third: isn't the girl to far placed in the middle of the picture when I crop the left wall out of it?
As a climber (but probably not at this grade) I agree it is important to include the anchors to contextualize what the subject is doing. At the same time, I am a bit confused about why the fixed anchors already have "krabs" in place. It does distract from the tension of the image for those aware of the difficulty involved (i.e., the climb is already pre-protected). Of course, the careful composition may be adding to the tension anyway. How high above the ground is she really in this photo?
Whatever, the bottom line is that this is a really good photo.
Hello Micheal,
Thanks for your critique. this route is a french 7a or UIAA 8, pretty hard but very beatyful. The krabs are in place because I was projecting this route , She is climbing this route onsight between my attempts. She is approx 6 meters above the ground. There was very little room to take this shot so I was unable to get the surroundings in.
being a climber also, it's nice to see an interesting climbing picture that has not been taken from above the climber.
She does a nice foothook, but a no-hands-rest at that place would even be more impressive ;-)
