Granny and her Children

After seeing Les' resurrected thread about why we photograph, I was motivated to look through some photographs that I printed up some twenty years ago from glass "slides" that my great grandfather made between about 1905 and 1925 or so.

I've studied these photos over the years, and I feel a very deep emotional connection to previous generations, and I think he left us an extraordinary gift. I hope the photographs I make of my children offer something similar to their children and grandchildren. This is why I make photographs.

I made an enlarged negative from the original small glass stereoscopic positive, and printed this one in pt/pd. I printed up several of these which I organized into a hand bound book. I asked my grandmother to write some notes about that time in her life to accompany the photographs.

My grandmother is front and center flanked by her two older brothers and embraced by their mother, my great grandmother. I have some photos in my gallery of my grandmother. She will be 98 this April.

A wonderful photograph and heartfelt words, Suzanne. You're very lucky to have her in your life

Each Christmas I try to tackle one or two negs from the rapidly deteriorating stock of 1/4 plate size negatives that my grandfather made in the '20' & I mount them in period frames (or period style frames I find at Target) and give them as gifts. The family really loves and cherishes them. Up until now none of 'the grandchildren' had any images. So I've assumed the responsibility of being the family's 'keeper of light' and it's wonderful gift to be capable of doing so.

All my best
Victor

That sure is a treasure Suzanne, thanks for sharing.

This has got such an informal, contemporary feel to it, it's lovely. Doesn't seem like it was taken so many years ago. It's the informal ones of our old family photos that I like the best. It makes it all seem just a moment ago....& the print must be gorgeous.

This brought a smile to my face. How wonderful that you have this photo, even better that you still have your grandmother with you to share her stories.

hi suzanne

this is wonderful
i too have been charged with the family photographs ...
this summer i got a suitcase full of images of my grandmother and grandfather and their cousins and relatives &C.
seeing the photographs of my grandfather was a wonderful thing,
since he passed away in the 1950s and i had only seen 2 maybe 3 photographs of him my whole life ...

thanks!

Thanks for the great comments, everyone!

There really is something wonderful about coming across images of a previous generation gazing at you from an old photograph. It brings their presence into the present, and perhaps yours into the past. Apologies for being overly sentimental.

Not overly sentimental at all. Great pictures, and I hope all of ours find similar fates.

Hi Suzanne, that's what it's all about!! Well done and thank you for the beautiful story.
