I think you've made a very nice portrait John. The shadows are a wee bit harsh but other than that it all works for me.
 
Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. I was working in very cramped conditions so no room for reflector or fill light. The light in use was a Multiblitz Minilight with honeycomb to give a very directional point light, hence the hard shadow.

I like this - I don't mind the directional lighting and shadows, in fact it might have worked and been quite dramatic to have them even stronger on the back wall - quite a classic effect. But works nicely as is. I like the way the pattern of the wood of the double bass echoes the tattoos on his arms, maybe would have liked to see a bit more of the instrument itself and/or possibly cut just a little off the top, as he seems to be in danger of being a bit low in the frame - but.....it's very nice.
