Derwent Water

Derwent Water

This is one of a group of images that I captured at Derwentwater in The English Lake District at dawn in May 2005. The cloud formations were amazing. I used IR film to give the image another dimension then developed this print in lith, toned it in selenium and then gold. The blue tones don't reproduce faithfully via my ancient scanner but they are rather fetching on the original!
Location
Friars Crag, Derwentwater, The English Lake District
Equipment Used
Mamiya 7II with 50mm lens
Exposure
20 seconds
Film & Developer
Ilford SFX 200
Paper & Developer
Kentmere Kentona in Fotospeed Lith, selenium toned then gold toned
Lens Filter
Cokin IR filter
The SFX gives the scene a wintery quality, with the distant fells looking like they've received a dusting of snow (not unknown in May in the Lakes!). Very evocative and a refreshing change from the usual chocolate box images of Lakeland. I really like the clumps of reeds in the foreground
