Cape Canaveral, Gantry Row Looking North

This photo is PL-62-76423 (year + negative #).

It was taken on my request as "director" to judge proper positioning of a plane to shoot liftoff pictures of the John Glenn Mercury launch.

This shows the Mercury gantry in the foreground, and at the far rear (north), you see the Saturn gantry under construction. Hangar "S" and the "VAB" which was not yet built would be on the far left.

Titusville is lost in the haze on the north but you could drive around the Cape and get pretty close to the Saturn launch site from there.

This negative is one of the 'rejects' that I retained. It is a good shot, but not the best one that we selected.

Wow! It's difficult to explain how interesting these are. Thanks again.

Actually, you are looking at the Centaur pad, the Mercury pad is behind it.

The "U" shaped road is where one of the released photos was taken. My station during launch was on that road with the emergency medical and photo crews.

The released aerial picture was taken from a much lower altitude and closer to the pad. This same low close shot was used for a Titan launch. I believe I may have one of those.

They were hard to test out. You just don't fly any old plane over the Cape at any old time. It took a lot of work to arrange.

Thanks for this timeless image. Hard to believe but 47 years later all the gantries are gone and
the pads are in ruins. I really like your historical comments.
