The paper needs a certain minimum level of light exposure to show first signs of grey. By preexposing the paper to diffuse light just below that level you can sensitise the paper to show details in areas so dense that they would otherwise remain blank.
In my enlarger I have an opaque filter for integral light measurement. Prior to exposure, with that filter in, I make a test strip to determine that amount of light which I can expose the paper to without showing signs of exposure.
In this case it was 2sec. Then I expose the paper 2sec with the opaque filter before I make the exposure without the filter as usual.
With a little luck this saves me from burning in the highlights which will not alway be easy
