Interesting. This looks old. I really like it. Not much of a critique, is it? How about this: same angle with a guy in period clothes sitting on the ground in the right forground looking off to the right or squinting into the camera? Nothing like a human to make any photo more compelling. The guy could have a scraggly-looking dog with him. That would be even better!
I think you should have titled it "Survivor" ! This marvelous creation of nature has obviously been around for a long, long time and suffered much. The lighting is wonderful. It looks so sunny and warm I just want to curl around the trunk and rest awhile. I love trees and you've done a good job of photographing this one... I would like to see more from different angles and at different times of day. Bet it would look gorgeous in snow. (Do you get snow in Norfolk?)
This immediatly made me think of Atge's trees. Not a bad comparison I think.
I am not sure that it is the best composition though. You may consider the tree being more in the center with only the hint of the other tree on the right edge. The left side is good, but a slight crop on the right and somewhere on the top would make the picture more balanced. (Maybe with the light branch on the right touching the edge). Including more of the road could have been better also, as you say, "more interesting with human in it too."
But overall, I do like this, and hope to see more.
Thank you Richard. I will get around to posting more as time permits. I never thought of cropping this one. The print looks so damn good framed. I hope to post more as time permits.
