I also like this a lot. Good for you being out there ready at dawn! And with all that LF equipment. It's not just a matter of "having a camera with me", but rather an expedition.
For those who are curious about the name of the tree, the early pioneers in Australia named just about everything after things at home. The resemblance to an apple tree is quite tenuous.
Did you do anything spectacular or heroic to control the vast contrast range, or was it just accurate placement and well judged development?
Very, very nice Tony one of the best landscapes I've seen in a very long time.
Well done and thank's for sharing this wonderful picture.
Warm regards
Julian
As a long-time user of APX100 and Rodinal, I am extremely impressed with your ability to control the lighting extremes in this picture. Any secrets you'd like to share with us?
Thanks everyone, much appreciated! Gettting up early and carting all that gear around is a pain but worth it when you catch something special.
The light in this shot was not as difficult as it may look due to some residual mist which knocked the contrast down a little. The only problem with these sort of shots is their fleeting nature. As far as exposure is concerned I have found that you have to be careful not to overdevelop with rodinal and APX 100 as you will soon block up the highlights.
For this shot I metered for the shadows(at iso 100) and under developed for 1 1/2 minutes ( 6 1/2 instead of 8 ) giving me shadow detail but a slightly thin neg. The yellow green filter also lifted the values of the foliage somewhat.
Unfortunately I can't get AX 100 anymore, and the Rodinal is nearly dried up. I am currently using FP4+ for 5x4 and it also works well in Rodinal.
Hope this is of some help to you all, regards, Tony
