Whittney 20-5

Whittney 20-5

Shot in my studio early this summer. Lit with dynalite strobes. This is a model I work with on a semi regular basis. It is from a "Model and Furniture" series I was working on. She is sitting on an arts and crafts coffee table, but I felt this shot was too tight for the table. It was considerably lighter in tone and distracted from the deeper skin tones and background. He hair has more detail in the original 11x14, but I wasn't able to hold it in the scan. This print is currently hanging in a hallway in my house.

The tones in this picture are fantastic. I would say that is due to it being lit very well. And your reaction to the forms of her body and the translation into a picture are equally fantastic.

There are two things that can be improved upon. 1: the light stand on the right edge. 2: the printing. The hot spot on the shoulder is too in relation to everything else, and it needs to be burned down. Also, by slightly lightening the left side of the picture (her right arm and leg) you will keep the visual momentum from being stuck on her left shoulder.

All in all this is good work. And, you are lucky that you have what appears to be a very good model.

Classic! Amazing tones. I agree with Richard's burning and dodging suggestions and am otherwise jealous. Great work. Shawn

Richard:

Thanks for the input. The hot spot on the right shoulder definitely jumps out in the scan. Not so bad in the print itself. The light stand on the right edge is a shadowed crease in the background, or maybe not. I thought it was, but looking at the print more closely, I can't really tell. Regardless, I agree that it distracts from the image, thanks for pointing it out.

Don,

I have never used artificial light so I am no expert, but my brain is very confused by the multiple sources of light. I find my eyes jumping around trying to figure out the light direction. I think we all expect there to be from one light direction? I'm sure there are lighting rules on this subject.
