I finally have things set up to go from tripping the shutter to making a print. Would love some feedback on things I should be thinking about or changing or doing better at any point in my process, etc.
First off, I like it. I've done some photography of my kids with 4x5 and 8x10 view cameras, and it's not easy! That said, the low key printing is a little at odds with the subject, as little girls are normally portrayed in high key. (Brightness equates to innocence, youth, optimism... whereas low key images tend to be more menacing.) Of course, you don't have to do what's normally done.
One more thing, if you have to cut off an arm, it looks less like an amputation if you do so well above the elbow. Hence, you might consider croping to give more of a head-n-shoulders shot. Next time, you might try backing away a bit, as you can always show less, but you can't get any more if it's not on the negative.
The best book on people photography that I know is William Mortensen's The Model. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Spectacular. Don't fret about the cropping. Bravo for getting her at all! You can put this one in a 4X5 mask and make gorgeous enlargements. She'll fit just right!
Looked at all of your portraits of the kids (yours and neighbour ones) and it looks sweet. Maybe they are a bit dark, but that's probably because of the scans; few match the real thing. However, you got a good thing going with this combination. Truly inspiring stuff. I am looking forward to see more.
