P S Ryde (1)

Built in 1936, the P S Ryde worked as a passenger ferry between Portsmouth and Ryde until 1970. It was the last working paddle steamer on this route.
In the 1970s it moved to Island Harbour and became a floating disco/nightclub and renamed The Ryde Queen. It was re-furbished after a fire in 1977 But has been unused since the late 1980s and is now totally derelict and rusting away.
There have been plans to restore it in the past but it has disintegrated too far for this to be possible now.

Thanks for your comments.

There are two sad things about this boat for me:

I have travelled on it when it was in service although as I was five years old when it was taken out of service, I don't really remember it.

I have also played on it as a band member when it was a nightclub. At that time there was a window to the engine room in one of the corridors and you could look at all the brass and copper of the engines which were complete and could probably be made to run without too much work. It is now stripped of all of its non-ferrous parts.

During its nightclub lifetime I think it was actually floating but now it would take a new hull to achieve it!
