Dungeness Landscape

Dungeness Landscape

Taken last Summer at my favorite location. I really wanted to bring out those clouds so I used a orange filter together with a polariser which is quite a difficult operation with a rangefinder camera like the Fuji 690GSW.

Excellent image---I well understand the filter issue as I have a great fondness for my Mamiya 7II (another RF, of course!)---actually I have never used the two together on the 7II as yet but your results are very encouraging----I am curious as to whether you metered through the polarizer rotated to the desired effect or just compensated by figuring the two filter factors as I've read both that the pol. factor stays constant AND that it varies as it's turned for effect!

Many thanks, Dave, Bruce and Jos for your kind comments. I've used this mix filter technique on quite a few occasions. I first read about this technique many, many years ago in the UKs Amateur Photographer. I forget the authors, name but he was dedicated IR man specialising in landscapes, and as an alternative to using IR film and also to lesson the dramatic and surreal affects of IR film he recomeds the mix filter alternative. With that information I loaded up a Nikon FM with Tri X using both a red filter and a polariser I got some very interesting results. It was a lot easier with the Nikon because of TTL metering. With the Fuji 690 which has no meter I followed the filter makers instructions and increased exposure by three stops (one stop for the orange, two stops for the polariser) and because of the slowish film the whole rig was tripod mounted. One other point I will mention: If you are using a range finder camera try using the Heliopan polarisiing filter, as the rotating ring is numbered making it easier to get the full affect of the polariser.
Hope this helps
Warm regards
Julian
