I made a print of a muddy ditch for a friend for his birthday once. Rotting leaves in a puddle. Super contrasty but with good tones in the bits that were appropriate. He didn't understand at all as I half expected. I was amused and didn't care he didn't like it. He appreciated the thought.
As an icon your photo looks like an unearthed Greek sculpture. A curled up woman draped in a sheet.
Hah, I can well imagine the interaction between your friend and yourself! I like that story; it's a good anecdote.
Yes, the shape 'does something' if you squint. My intuition leads me into slightly more macabre directions. Although that's more of an afterthought than something I experienced as such on the spot. I was really just struck by the prettiness of the shape as such. It's a problematic prettiness, of course, given that this is just trash chocking up a ditch. But taken at face value, I still like it.
i would make the same image, but would print it in such a way to obscure the actual subject a bit. That would be the challenge for me. Not a criticism, just that it takes courage to give as a gift as graham06 found out. Similar to that dead cat image that i made and still haven't figured out how to print that leads to a conversation verses it's "problematic prettiness".
Thanks @jvo, that's interesting; I should reflect a bit on printing choices. I have (inkjet) printed this particular image in pretty much the version you see above; a little less muted. But it's still very 'true to life'. I haven't envisioned the image in any other way; I should think about that for a bit. Thanks!
