Crossing of Main Street over the railroad branch. Both, road and rail, are much diminished since the old days. This road is no longer the highway; it now bypasses the town. Most of the rail lines in the area are abandoned, or see very limited freight service. Photo July 2019. Print Feb. 2022 8x10.
This was once the main highway and a busy railroad line
Families and vacationers travelled these ways dressed so fine.
Now it just looks humble and almost deserted, folks say -
But the summer crops still ride to market on these tracks today.
At least some of these rail lines do still run for freight. Fall is when the crops are in, and the vegetable canneries need to ship. Passenger rail service has been abandoned since who knows when. This line now stops far short of its former terminus. Acknowledgements to the small rail line, Wisconsin Southern, that keeps this and similar lines running.
