Frank Dean, Blacksmith

Frank Dean, Blacksmith

I photographed Frank at his forge at Rodmell, East Sussex in 1997-8. He must have been one of the last surviving traditional blacksmiths having begun working with his father at this forge in 1932, his father starting at the forge in 1910. I later made a book of salt prints from the series.

Nice. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site features a reconstructed blacksmithing building with reenactors. They said that blacksmiths like to keep the light level very low in their workplace because they want to see the glow of the hot metal.

Nice shot. In the details under "film and developer" you have written HP5+ and Fuji 400. Did you mean that in the series of shots some were made on Fuji 400 colour film as well ?

Just out of interest, what was your developer for HP5+ ?

Thanks

pentaxuser - I should have been clearer and not mentioned the Fuji film, you are right I used it at times during this project and it was of course, Fuji Neopan 400. The same with the cameras, some and some. HP5+ was developed in Perceptol as per Barry Thornton although today I used Pyrocat-HD almost exclusively.

BEN 4 - OM4Ti used with HP5+.

bluechromis - I've never thought about the low light levels other than they always seem dark. But that explanation sounds very good, low light would indeed help in seeing the temperature of the iron 'back in the day'.

Thanks for your comments
