Yes, he lived here for a while and painted farm life. Well known is the painting The Potato Eaters. Harsh times.

Indeed. Not much of the landscape as Van Gogh would have experienced it is left though. It was thoroughly destroyed in the process of 'improving' the agricultural production system. We're currently forced to bring some aspects back to how they were before ca. 1950 to be able to sort of cope with climate change.
