Single track road on moorland in N Scotland. These roads are only wide enough for a single vehicle, so they have occasional passing places where vehicles can pass one another.

Heh. Original definition of "wide spot in the road." If there's enough traffic, someone will build a shop there. Where there's a shop, there will soon be a pub. Those businesses need to get mail, so a post office opens. Next thing you know, you have a tiny village, what we used to call a "wide spot in the road."
