@Andrew O'Neill Bayless rebuilt the pulp mill and operated into the 1940's then abandoned everything leaving it all to ruins. The paper mill and dam are part of the town park and history and can be explored at ones own risk. There is a sign that reads "do not climb on dam", often ignored. BTW, the remnants of the first "earthen" dam are still present.
 
Cool! Looks almost like ruins from Rome or somewhere. I vaguely recall from one account that the town had erected a fence to keep cows? deer? don't remember what, out of the town which became another obstacle for folks trying to escape the oncoming water. I've been by there at least once, but not recently.
