Thanks Brendan! Yeah, I've been working on this one for the past few days. This print is actually at grade 1.5 (on a diffusion enlarger) and required quite a bit of dodging, and then some burning-in at grade 1.5 and 3 to get a better balance.
On the straight print the bottom half of the madonna icon and the candles below were almost black, except for the flames. Had to dodge these a lot during the base exposure. The upper part of the icon was blown-out due to the two lights, so that had to be burned-in. The distant wall in the center also needed another stop of exposure. Then maybe another half-stop of burning-in around the edges and corners. Just takes longer with fiber paper since I can't tell how the changes are really going to look until the paper dries. I'll do test-strips and stick them in the microwave for certain areas, but I always like to look at the whole print before deciding if I'm happy with it.
