I like the horizontal treatment and the overall result, but on my monitor it looks like nothing is in focus. Also I find that the wrinkled fabric is a bit distracting. Maybe the background was too near the subject.

I agree with the above poster about the attractive horizontal composition and the focus question. It looks from the frame edges (esp. lower right) that it was contacted through a print-file page or maybe with inadequate pressure, or maybe the film wasn\'t flat in the camera, and that may account for the overall softness issue.

The wrinkled fabric is okay by me.

I think in a final print I\'d increase the contrast a bit, but that could just be my monitor vs. your monitor.

Actually you are both right. It looked okay on my monitor but I can see that it doesn't online. I think it needs higher resolution and a better scan. I scanned a contact. I will go back and scan the negative as I should have in the first place. Just my little demonstration of the adage that there is never time to do it right, but always time to do it over!

i like the overall look of the image and you've certainly captured a great moment/expression. it needs more contrast but hard to say since you think this scan doesn't represent the print. i am not bothered by the background but i do find the small piece of shirt showing on her left shoulder distracting. doc

I look forward to seeing the new scan. I thought that the original must be sharper than the image I see on my monitor.
I hate to nit pick, but the wrinkle in the background fabric that lines up with the crown of the hat at the front bugs me.

Here is the new scan. It is a bit better than the other one. Scanned from the negative and made with contrast closer to the print.

Thom,

I like the image a lot, I think it's a great composition, pose and setup.
Do you use a stylist or do it all yourself? I see a couple small details that make the final 3% that either get set up before, or digitally retouched up after.

Despite my teeny nitpick, it's great inspiration.. thanks for sharing.

Thanks. The model and I did it all. She did the makeup and she wore my hat. The rest is all just soft box lighting and catching the right expression.

Thanks for re-posting. I think this is really fine work.

Next time I'll do it right the first time. Thanks.
