Shed

Shed

My parents old farmhouse and the immediate surrounding buildings will soon be coming down to make way for a newer home. Convenient yes, but it certainly won't have the character nor the history that the old house has. My goal over the next few weeks is to document the house and the outbuildings. It should be both fun and a good learning experience for me. This little old shed has stood outside the back door forever. I've always liked it, but haven't yet figured out how to photograph it in a way I like. As I stood there this evening it dawned on me that I always look at things as a whole instead of just parts. I need to work on seeing things differently. So this is the first of the images that I plan to make. I'm going to reshoot it because I don't like that the fence is out of focus. I'm also not sure that I care for the hinges and door to the right. I think they are a bit distracting. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on how to make this better.

Nancy, I think you have the right idea here. A tripod and stopping way down will help on this shot, but using parts of the building to convey the whole is a very good idea. Why not just the door or window? How about the hinge itself or a detail of the shingles? Maybe the edge of the roof or the eaves?

I think this would make for an interesting series with the whole place as a sum of the parts. Great idea and keep shooting if there isn't much time left. Shoot lots of film and let your imagination carry you away. Don't develop the film until you have shot up the place! tim
