I can see the marked resemblance between you and your grandmother David in the picture of you at aged four.

Isn't that amazing: I was always told that I looked like my mother, not my grandmother. But, yes there might be a similarity. My grandmother was only 39 when I was born and only 36 when my brother was born. To me, she was almost a 'mother', as we were very close, especially because she got married at age 15 (to a 31 year-old man, also from Sardinia!!!) Back then this was not really unusual. (After all, Sophia Loren (b 1934) was married to Carlos Ponti (b 1913). - David.

David, A real piece of history here.
This is very timely. I've been repairing old family images in PS lately and found it challenging and also rewarding. My family wants me to do even more but I find it hard to take time from my normal photo work to do much more.
Photos like this are real treasures and family keepsakes. Sadly, I have a very small family and as time goes by we're running out of folks to pass these items along to.
Thanks for sharing this photo and bit of history with us.

Yes, it's great that you have these insights into the past. The generations in my own family were way too spread out to have a 5 generation photo, but in general there are not many photos. I guess it was more of a luxury a hundred years back. (Wonder in 2117 how many people will be passing around CF cards with the images taken this year?!!! ) [oops, shouldna said that ...]

yes. enjoyed these photos -- I had some taken similar to you age 4 -- it was a 'daylight' studio and the bloke used a half plate camera and went behind a black cloth into what must have been his darkroom -- then came out with a smile in his face as the negative was good and we got prints a few days later.

'Haven't seen many pro portraits this old. The ones I see from the 40s are stunning - the quality.
'Appreciate your posting this one. It'll take days, but I want to find a particular negative (30s or 40s) & see if my fledgling printing skills can get something viewable.

There really WAS something special about the B&W work done then. Even the B&W Hollywood movies from the 30s and 40s are stunning. Thank you all, and I though I was a bit hesitant with posting 'family' photos, I do now think I did well by this. - David Lyga

David, thanks for sharing your treasure. I'm always amazed that so few who claim to be photographers have invested energies in photographically finding their own previous generations...all they have to do is ask their own elders or other lines of their families. I've posted a few of my people.

Studio photographers have always been among the best of us...
