After reading the thread on standards in the gallery, I realised I needed to do my bit to help lowering them. When I'm home I'll find some darkroom prints to scan, in the meantime found this neg scan on my dropbox :).
If I remember my Ukrainian summer school (Romanian is not that different, perhaps), is this pronounced 'Daszha'? Good focal length of course, and you did NOT lower the 'gallery standards'. But, I would have liked a bit of detail in the hair. - David Lyga
Yep, Dasha, diminutive of Daria (Дарья) (actually, Dasha is indeed Ukrainian - I live in Romania, but spend maybe 20% of my time in Ukraine, working in the west or with friends in the east.)
Yes, I'd like more detail in the hair too . I will actually revisit this negative - I scanned it a long while ago with a less than brilliant film scanner before I had my "darkroom" (ahem, kitchen) properly set up - or more accurately, before I bought a table in Ikea so I don't need to pack away the enlarger after every use, and before I obtained some proper blackout material so I didn't need to wait for a moonless night to print! Those are solved problems now, so I may have a go at printing it this weekend...
I really like this image a lot. The feel and mood it evokes transcends any technical nerdy shortcomings imho. The focus is on her face as it should be. To sharpen the hair would confuse the eye and break the mood.
